DDoS Protection in Saudi Arabia

DDoS Attack Threats

A distributed denial of service attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt normal traffic of a server, service, or network by overwhelming the target or its surrounding infrastructure with a flood of internet traffic. From a high level, a DDoS attack is like a traffic jam clogging up a highway, preventing regular traffic from arriving at its desired destination. They are relatively cheap and easy to organize and can be highly effective, though they often require significant resources to mitigate against.

Hostgee has been successfully mitigating against DDoS attacks for years. Based on the vast expertise we've developed a solution connecting both proprietary software components and hardware that will protect your website or servers against DDoS attacks of all types with SLA guarantee.

Types of Web Based Attacks

A DDoS attack is launched from numerous compromised devices, often distributed globally in what is referred to as a botnet, whereas a Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack can be launched from a single device connected to the Internet. Most web-based attacks, DoS and DDoS attacks can be divided into three types: volume-based attacks, attacks targeting core web protocols and application layer attacks. In all these scenarios, Hostgee applies its DDoS protection solutions outside of your network, meaning that only filtered traffic reaches your hosts.

Volume Based Attacks

Volume-based attacks are the most common types of web-based threats making up of almost 65% of all registered ones. The attack’s goal is to saturate the bandwidth of the target server or network and render it unreachable to legitimate requests. UDP/ICMP and other spoofed-packet floods fall under this category. The scale of volumetric attacks is measured in bits per second (Bps), or more typically in Gigabits per second (Gbps).

Protocol Attacks

The target of protocol-based attacks is to consume actual server resources, or those of standard communication equipment, such as firewalls and load balancers. Hostgee mitigates this type of attack by blocking “bad” traffic before it even reaches the site, leveraging visitor identification technology that differentiates between legitimate website visitors (humans, search engines, etc.) and automated or malicious clients.

Application Layer Attacks

Includes low-and-slow attacks, GET/POST floods, attacks that target Apache, Windows or OpenBSD vulnerabilities and more. Comprised of seemingly legitimate and innocent requests, the goal of these attacks is to crash the web server, and the magnitude is measured in Requests per second (Rps). Hostgee mitigates Application Layer attacks by monitoring visitor behavior, blocking known bad bots, and challenging suspicious or unrecognized entities with JS test, Cookie challenge, and even CAPTCHAs.

I'm Under a DDoS Attack. How Do I get Protected?

I have a server with Hostgee.com

If you already are a customer of Hostgee.com, there's no required to do on your side in the event of a DDoS attack. Even you won't notice that your server or website is under an attack, the essential DDoS protection feature that is offered with most of our hosting packages. However, if any attack is massive enough and scales beyond the free mitigation limit that is included with your Dedicated Server, VPS or Cloud plan, you may want to consider ordering a DDoS protection add-on to cope with it.

Upgrading to a higher level of DDoS protection will not take much time; however, it is a great idea to place a full DDoS protection plan beforehand, if you run a web-based company that is known to bring frequent DDoS attacks, e.g., a game server. Get a quote on the mitigation capacity add-on for your hosting plan from our support gurus through the live chat widget or open a new ticket inside your account area.

I have a server with another provider

It's an advantage to have your applications and data hosted within Hostgee's secured network in case of a DDoS attack, but it's not the only option. If you lease a server from any other hosting provider and want to get protected against DDoS attacks, we have a solution for you.

This technique is often called a Remote DDoS Protected Proxy and is basically an encrypted tunnel between our secure facility in Riyadh and your backend server. In case of a DDoS attack, all requests that target your web property will be routed through the mitigating hardware located at Hostgee's data center in Riyadh to filter out malicious packets and make sure that all legitimate requests reach the backend server. Your backend server's real IP address will be hidden behind our secure proxy to make it unreachable for any attackers.

Some Layer 4 attacks cannot be successfully mitigated through a remote DDoS protected proxy by design. Please consider moving your website(s) or service(s) to our protected network for maximum security.
